Aug 23 (Reuters) Fighting on Sri Lanka's besieged Jaffna peninsula appeared to be dying down after more than a week of open warfare there with Tamil Tiger rebels, the army said on Tuesday, but rebel mortars were fired at army camps in the east. With road links through rebel territory cut and air and sea movement sharply curtailed, shortages have been rising fast for the roughly half a million people on the army-held peninsula.

A grant of 5,61,000 liters of fuel to LTTE |
Aug 23 (LeN) The LTTE have retained all the bowsers that transported fuel to Jaffna and released the drivers and their assistants later. As a result the LTTE has been able to retain 17 bowsers each carrying 33 000 liters totaling 561000 liters. There is an acute shortage of fuel in the North these days, kerosene oil fetching Rs.100/- per liter and petrol Rs. 200 per liter.

Three LTTE arms agents arrested in Thailand |
Aug 23 (LNP) Thai authorities have arrested three Sri Lankans who were procuring arms for the LTTE. They were arrested while trying to ship a quantity of arms and ammunition to Mullaitivu, Thai authorities have informed Sri Lanka. On a request by Sri Lanka Police, Thailand has agreed to extradite the suspects to Colombo.
