Police and jail guard allegedly torture a boy to confess |
Feb 15 (AHRC) The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information regarding the alleged torture, by the Police, of a 16-year-old boy by the Sooriyawewa police on 20 January 2008 in Sri Lanka. He was tortured into confessing to a crime, which he has since denied. He was also reportedly tortured by his guards at the Hambanthota prison on January 24. Police filed charges against him of two robbery cases using the forced confessions.

Feb 15 (BN) Standard & Poor's lowered its outlook on Sri Lanka's credit rating to "negative," citing weakening state finances and fallout from the end of a cease- fire between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels. The credit assessor today affirmed Sri Lanka's B+ rating, four levels below investment grade. S&P on Aug. 8 had raised Sri Lanka's outlook to "stable."
