End game in Sri Lanka?

Apr 25 (Forbes) There is little room for hope or optimism in the endgame now unfolding in Sri Lanka, in spite of the surgical cutting down by the armed forces of the ruthless and authoritarian LTTE. The LTTE edifice has surely collapsed. Not only is the formerly formidable war machine--veteran of a 30-year secessionist war--now reduced to smithereens, and its remaining cadre cornered into a 12-square-kilometer strip of land in the Northern Province, but defections have begun. more..

Responding to Sri Lanka's crisis amid chaos and uncertainty

Apr 25 (AN) Today has been an entirely chaotic day - not unexpected. By the time I got into the office, I'd already had 10 or so phone calls about responding to what has become a dire humanitarian crisis in the north, where the army is battling Tamil Tiger rebels. As often happens in Sri Lanka when there's calm before a storm, the sleepiness of the last 10 days of extended holidays has suddenly been shattered by frantic and almost panic-ridden attempts to get into areas where more..

Last stand in the jungle for Tamil Tigers

Apr 25 (AFP) The coastal village of Puttumatalan, once a vital Tamil Tiger supply lifeline, now overlooks the scene of what seems sure to be the rebels' final defeat after decades of struggle. Shed no tears for Tigers

Apr 25 (IE) At the peak of the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka in the winter of 1987, when the Indian army was still suffering more casualties than at any time during the war in Kargil, I had a conversation with then-Lt Gen (and later chief of army staff) Bipin Joshi, its director of military operations. These LTTE people, he said, were just macho young people with no other purpose in life but to kill and die. I thought, then, that it was in fact Gen Joshis remark that sounded so much like a macho soldier talking. more..

Letters to the Editor: Mirage of Eelam

Apr 25 (Hindu) The article The mirage of Eelam by Malini Parthasarathy (April 24) was excellent. It nailed the myth that the LTTE is the sole protector of the Tamils in Sri Lanka; a myth created and fuelled by most of the political parties and the media in Tamil Nadu. It is clear that the LTTE, in order to safeguard its top leadership, is causing immense hardship to the Tamil civilians caught in the war between the Tigers and the security forces. more..

The agony in Sri Lanka

The Obama administration and other governments, particularly India and China, should pressure both the Sri Lankan government and the Tigers to halt the fighting and permit trapped civilians to escape. more..

Malini Parthasarathy: The Mirage of Eelam

Apr 25 (LG) The adage hitting the nail on the head could not have been more forcibly expressed in what Hindus Malini Parthsarathy has written in the quest of a mirage called Eelam. In what could have been a lengthy thesis, she has quite briefly sailed smoothly through the salient and significant issues in an easy to read manner leaving the reader in doubt how a legitimate demand soon turned into a terrorist nightmare. Along the way it became counterproductive. more..

Will Tamils' 'Sun God' live on?

May 20 (TS) There was no glamour about the shattered remains of Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, shown yesterday by Sri Lankan TV. And little resemblance to the charismatic Che Guevara, the murdered Argentine-born fighter who became a pinup for a generation of young rebels. Prabhakaran, pronounced dead by the Sri Lankan government, but said by Tamil supporters to be in hiding, was a violent figure in life. And his drawing power, like Guevara's, may continue after his demise. more..

The Jaffna Tamils

May 21 (LG) As I watched TV visuals of the death of V.Prabakaran, the head of the LTTE, and read and heard accounts of the way his dead body was disfigured and rolled in dirt by the Sri Lankan Army , my mind went back to the years 1951-55 when I was a student of the Loyola College of Chennai, run by the Society of Jesus. Every class, including mine, had four or five Tamils from the Northern Province of Ceylon as Sri Lanka used to be known before 1972. more..

Is it the end of struggle?

May 21 (LG) Is it true? Has Prabhakaran met his inevitable end? Sri Lanka watchers in India will find it difficult to believe, for the simple reason that those who are opposed to the Tigers have claimed that Prabhakaran has been killed on earlier occasions also. To illustrate, during the IPKF interregnum, the Indian media had headlines in the front page that Prabhakaran has been killed. Two days later the LTTE published a photograph of Prabhakaran, alive and kicking. more..

Q&A: After Prabakaran

Sri Lanka : likely Scenarios

May 21 (LG) No reason to doubt the statement of the Sri Lankan Army about the death of Prabakaran, the leader of the LTTE, and other leaders of the LTTE. Wijeweera and Prabakaran: Rebels within a dysfunctional democracy -Part 2

May 21 (AHRC) Exactly what made both movements represented by these two leaders (The JVP and the LTTE) abandon the struggle for democracy and rule of law altogether and resort to violence reflects on the limitations of other political movements within the country. At no time was there a single political party or tendency in Sri Lanka which made it their aim to construct and improve the institutions of the rule of law and democracy. more..

Wijeweera and Prabakaran: Rebels within a dysfunctional democracy -Part 1

May 21 (AHRC) Following the demise of the LTTE leadership there is now much discussion about the LTTE itself. Today there is much to be gained by studies and reflections of both movements. Of course there are vast differences in the two movements. more..

I hope

May 21 (LG) Finally, with the defeat of the LTTE, the war is done. A piece of me feels a bit of sadness at the LTTEs demise - only because of the what-ifs. Will Tamils' 'Sun God' live on?

The Jaffna Tamils

May 21 (LG) As I watched TV visuals of the death of V.Prabakaran, the head of the LTTE, and read and heard accounts of the way his dead body was disfigured and rolled in dirt by the Sri Lankan Army , my mind went back to the years 1951-55 when I was a student of the Loyola College of Chennai, run by the Society of Jesus. Every class, including mine, had four or five Tamils from the Northern Province of Ceylon as Sri Lanka used to be known before 1972. more..

Is it the end of struggle?

Wijeweera and Prabakaran: Rebels within a dysfunctional democracy -Part 1

I hope

May 21 (LG) Finally, with the defeat of the LTTE, the war is done. A piece of me feels a bit of sadness at the LTTEs demise - only because of the what-ifs.
