Defeating conspiracy against judges
Jan 17 (CT) There has been a concerted effort by the NGOs, both here and abroad, to scandalize our Judges and attack, in a most dastardly manner, the institution of the judiciary. When the attack began, we were ruled by a govt, which was considered anti-Western, pro-Russian and Left leaning. So, it was a Western agenda to destabilize the entire govt machinery, including the three pillars of democracy, the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary. There were enough and more reasons for

Editorial: Towards a police state?
Jan 17 (Island) Rajapaksa govt stood accused of militarising society. Intoxicated with power it went so far as to order a military crackdown on a civilian protest against the contamination of groundwater by a factory in Rathupaswala in 2013. It looks as if the yahapalana administration, which came to power promising to demilitarise society, were trying to create a police state. It blatantly abuses the judicial process and the long arm of the law to suppress democratic dissent.

Right to information on rainfall & food supply

Unlike in India, there is no thawing snow to feed the rivers or large volumes of ground water, except in Jaffna, to provide irrigation water. In an average year by this time, Maha rains have tapered off, water reservoirs and the rivers are full or near full and the rice fields are in crop & approaching maturity.
