The economy in the first and second half of the year |
Jul 2 (ST) Looking back at the first half of the year that is behind us, and the second half of the year before us, this year is likely to be another year of low economic growth and much hardship for a majority of the people. The economic recovery after the April bomb blasts is being throttled by the eruption of communal tensions amid a lack of political leadership. The first quarter of the year, before the horrendous human tragedy, was a period of economic recovery.

Towards a universal definition of terrorism |
Jul 2 (CT) Ten years ago, SL prevailed in a Thirty Years War against a suicide-bombing separatist terrorism. Ten years later, this year 2019, on Easter Sunday, we were attacked atrociously by another type of terrorism: Islamist jihadist terrorism. So, the question of terrorism has been and remains an existential problem for SL and it is from that perspective that I speak. The question What is to be done? was initially posed by the writer Chernyshevsky, but was better known after Lenin posed it.

Editorial: Dead rubbers and deadwood |
Jul 2 (Island) Our national cricket squad represents, in microcosm, the country at large and is similar, in many respects, to the yahapalana govt, which lacks proper leadership and is all at sea. Its performance is extremely erratic and each of its victories, which are few and far between, is followed by a string of humiliating defeats. Its impressive win against England, the other day, raised Sri Lankans hopes, which were unfortunately dashed when it badly lost to South Africa.
