Death notice for dog |
May 21 (DM) A family in Kandy has posted a death notice for their pet dog which was killed as a result of a brawl between two groups. The death notice says the pet dog named �Teddy� was beaten on the head using a pole and dumped into a well. While expressing sadness over the death, the family which brought up the dog cursed those involved in murdering the animal as well as their parents and children.

'Sri Lanka may get IMF funds in 4-6 weeks' |
May 21 (LBO) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is likely to release the next tranche of its program loan to Sri Lanka in 4-6 weeks if its management and board are satisfied with the island's budget deficit for 2010, an official said. Floods affect half a million, displace thousands |

Health threat looms in the wake of floods |

Blue sapphire found near Jethawana Stupa |
May 22 (CT) Several artifacts, including a blue sapphire, have been unearthed during excavations done near the Jethawana Stupa in Anuradhapura. The sapphire, which weighs 10 g and 42 mg and was found 1.6m underground, is thought to be dated back to the 1 AD - 2AD. Lanka to set up solar plants with Japanese, Korean help |

South- West monsoon starts to develop |

Disaster situation declared in Nuwara Eliya |

Two new species of Rasbora described |
May 22 (PFK) Sri Lankan scientists have reviewed the Rasbora of Sri Lanka and conclude that there are five species on the island, including two species that they describe as new. Sri Lanka private provident fund contributors fall |
May 22 (LBO) Active contributors to Sri Lanka's Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) of private sector workers dropped by 300,000 in 2009, a year in which the country went through an economic downturn, official data showed. EPF's active accounts dropped 12 percent to 2.0 million from 2.3 million a year earlier. Contributing companies and employers fell by 2,625 to 60,000, down 4.2 percent from a year earlier, according to data published in the central bank's annual report.
