May 17 (LBO) Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals rose 9.0 percent to 65,591 in April this year, which helped raise the number of holidaymakers for the first four months of 2012 to 330,116, official data showed Wednesday. The Indian Ocean Island greeted 63,835 visitors in April 2011, while the cumulative arrivals from January to April 2011 were 278,975, Sri Lanka Tourism said. Father sexually abuses daughter |
May 17 (CT) A father who was arrested on charges of having sexually abused his nine year old daughter has been remanded further till 21 May following a Magistrate Court order. At the hearing, appearing on behalf of the defendant, attorney-at-law Chanaka Kapurubandara appealed to the Magistrate to release the defendant on bail stating that he had no connection to the case and was not guilty of the charges and also because he has at the time been imprisoned for a period of one month.

Dengue deaths rise to 55 |

Treasure hunters caught with expensive equipment |
May 17 (Island) 14 treasure hunters were arrested on Tuesday, from two different locations while they were digging for treasure, police said. At one site, the police recovered expensive digging equipment worth five million rupees.
